Wind Powered Cruise Ships
Aimed at a high-end experience, wind powered cruise ships will cut emission by up to 50% compared to traditional cruise ships and with no engine noise. The first vessel of its kind called Silenseas, built by Chantiers de L’Atlantique in France are powered by wind sails. These are not cloth sails as in old sailing vessels, but massive paneled solid sails that uses advanced technology to capture the wind. The Silenseas will be availabe in two versions, a 623 feet and a 689 feet vessel. They will both be equipped with the sail system as well as hybrid engines for use when wind propulsion is not available.
