This Gorgosaurus Dinosaur Skull Recently Fetched $6.1 Million at Auction

Who would have thought Dinosaurs fossils would be hot commodities at Sotheby’s Auctions. This Gorgosaurus skull recently sold for $6.1 million a few months ago at a Sotheby’s auction. If that doesn’t boggle the mind, how about a T-Rex skeleton selling for an astounding $31.8 million in 2020.

Nicknamed Maximus, the skull was purchased by an anonymous buyer for the whopping sum. While the price is much lower than traditional dinosaur bones auctions that typically fetch anywhere from $20 to $30 million, the lower price may have been the result of recent controversy surrounding how many natural bones are within the specimen.

Additionally, the scientific community is not too fond of prehistoric fossil auctions because it places these high-value assets in the hands of a few individuals and greatly restricts research and study on the skeletons. On the other hand, some buyers are willing to allow their purchased fossils to be used for scientific research and study.
